Project Overview

In parallel to a tactical effort to accelerate the reduction of its growing Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) backlog, the Client desired to launch a strategic effort to identify opportunities to reduce manual processes, mitigate risks, and improve the overall quality of EDD reviews – with a goal of reducing the overall customer acquisition timeframe and associated risk, through streamlining select components of the onboarding process. Reference Point (RP) deployed a team with AML domain expertise to document the current process, identify pain points created by manual processes, outline key hand-offs between functional teams, and provide recommendations to create efficiencies and reduce risk. The RP team worked closely with cross-functional process owners to determine the best course of action for all stakeholders prior to delivering a range of recommendations, customized by level of effort, cost, and impact.

Solution

  • Reference Point deployed a team led by former JP Morgan Chase AML Executives, paired with strategic business process consultants, to document current state operations across four functional areas and recommend process enhancements to increase overall quality and efficiency of the AML EDD review process.
  • RP conducted stakeholder interviews to identify the manual processes that were exposing the AML Risk team to unnecessary risk and causing substantial delays in the various segments of the review process.
  • The team also developed additional guidance for reviewers through new procedure materials to streamline and standardize the case review process.
  • In addition to the EDD review process, Reference Point performed a comprehensive review of the online application to evaluate if upstream pain points regarding the customer’s UI/UX could have consequential impacts on the EDD review process.

Impact

  • The Reference Point expert team applied executive AML process experience from across the industry to the client context, providing insights on industry standards and best practices related to comprehensive AML processes and potential process enhancements for consideration.
  • The Client received detailed, actionable recommendations to achieve the desired target state, including a fully-developed Pilot Program Plan to reveal process impacts on a smaller scale prior to implementing across the EDD team.
